HMC Architects has been selected as ENR California's Design Firm of the Year for 2023.

The Los-Angeles-based, employee-owned firm focuses on work in healthcare, education and civic spaces—sectors that have been booming in California recently. After a setback in revenue between 2020 and 2021, the company's 2022 total increased 50% over the year prior to reach $124.7 million.

Major projects in California include the $1.7-billion Harbor UCLA Medical Center, the $537 million UCSD Ridgewalk student housing and the $450-million Clovis Community Medical Center expansion. The company has also worked on an array of educational projects such as the Del Oro High School, Patrick Henry Elementary School and the Mt SAC Athletics Complex.

HMC is investing in its leadership by partnering with DesignIntelligence to create a yearlong firm-wide development program for its next generation. The company has named a director for diversity and inclusion and works in partnerships with historically Black colleges and universities to increase diversity in its workforce. It also conducts annual pay equity reviews to ensure fair pay across all demographics.

In terms of community outreach, the HMC Designing Futures Foundation has invested $1.6 million in transformative nonprofits such as 400Forward and Arquitina. The firm also provides a grant to support the Los Angeles County Dept. of Arts and Culture Gladeo Creative Career portal.
